Fan-Player Altercation Marrs Birmingham City’s Debut in EFL Championship, Police Investigate
In their inaugural match back in the EFL Championship, English soccer’s second division, Birmingham City FC ended in a draw against Ipswich Town, but the post-match celebrations were marred by an altercation between a fan and a player.
Television footage captured the incident, showing a spectator seemingly making contact with Jack Taylor of Ipswich Town after the away team scored the equalizing goal in added time during the 1-1 stalemate at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, Birmingham.
Birmingham City, who regained their spot in England’s second tier following promotion, had initially taken the lead when Jay Stansfield netted a stunning goal in the 55th minute. However, with time running low, George Hirst converted a penalty for Ipswich Town to secure a point for the visiting team.
The decision to award the late penalty was met with controversy, and emotions ran high during Ipswich Town’s celebrations. Scuffles broke out between players from both sides as the incident spilled past the goal and towards the stands.
Footage then shows a fan leaping over barriers towards the players, appearing to make contact with Ipswich Town’s Taylor. The fan was subsequently removed from the crowd by stadium security.
“I believe there might have been an altercation between the crowd and one of our players, which wasn’t entirely appropriate,” Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna told Sky Sports post-game. “It will be reviewed or reported, and we shall see.”
The English Football Association (FA) has confirmed it is investigating the incident further. West Midlands Police are also collaborating with Birmingham City FC to review CCTV footage and ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Both Birmingham City and Ipswich Town have been contacted for comment.
