Jen Pawol Makes MLB History as First Woman to Umpire Regular Season Game

In a groundbreaking moment for baseball history, Jen Pawol made her debut as the first female umpire in a Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season game on Saturday at Atlanta’s Truist Park.

Pawol, who has previously officiated in minor leagues, took up position at first base during Game 1 of the Atlanta Braves’ doubleheader against the Miami Marlins. The occasion drew a crowd of tens of thousands, who watched with excitement as Pawol stepped onto the field with an infectious smile.

Upon exchanging lineup cards, both teams – the Marlins and Braves – warmly welcomed Pawol into their ranks. Fans also joined in the celebration, displaying signs proclaiming “Welcome to The Show, Jen” and “Thank you, Jen! From girls and women everywhere.”

The game commenced with Pawol focusing intently on her duties as an MLB rookie umpire. She demonstrated her proficiency by accurately calling several close plays with swift decisiveness. The Braves ultimately clinched a 7-1 victory.

Pawol’s impressive career includes being the seventh woman to umpire in the minor leagues and making her professional debut in the Gulf Coast League back in June 2016. She is now one of 17 Triple-A umpires who stand ready to be called up to MLB games if needed.

Pawol’s momentous weekend continues, with plans to work the second half of Saturday’s doubleheader at third base and to serve as the home plate umpire during Sunday’s series finale.

In a statement released on Wednesday, MLB commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., lauded Pawol’s call-up as an “historic accomplishment” and a testament to her dedication and passion for the game. He further added that she had earned this opportunity and set a strong example for aspiring women and young girls with dreams of field roles.

Manfred concluded by extending his congratulations on behalf of Major League Baseball to Pawol and her family, wishing them well on this significant milestone.
