Israeli Strike in Gaza City Kills Six Journalists, Including Four from Al Jazeera: International Outcry Over Alleged Assassination of Brave Reporter Anas Al-Sharif

In Gaza City late Sunday night, six journalists were reportedly killed in an Israeli strike, with four of the deceased hailing from Al Jazeera. Among the fatalities was reporter Anas Al-Sharif, who was accused by the Israeli military of leading a Hamas cell. Another prominent Al Jazeera journalist, Mohammed Qreiqeh, also lost his life in the attack, according to the network.

Al Jazeera issued a statement following the incident, asserting that the strike represented a desperate attempt to silence voices ahead of a potential occupation of Gaza. Just before his death, Al-Sharif posted on social media, “If this madness does not end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.”

According to hospital director Dr. Mohammad Abu Salmiya, Al-Sharif was in a tent with other journalists near the entrance to the Al-Shifa Hospital when he was killed. The strike resulted in at least seven fatalities, as per Salmiya’s account.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) accused Al-Sharif of leading a Hamas cell in Gaza that allegedly carried out rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops. Previously, the IDF had presented documents they claimed demonstrated “unequivocal proof” of Al-Sharif’s ties to Hamas. In a statement following the strike, the military reiterated their claims, stating that “intelligence information and many documents found in the Gaza Strip confirmed his military affiliation to Hamas.”

Prior to the incident, Al-Sharif had denied any political affiliations on social media, asserting, “I, Anas Al-Sharif, am a journalist with no political affiliations. My only mission is to report the truth from the ground — as it is, without bias.” He expressed concern that speaking the truth was seen as a threat by the occupation forces.

The Committee to Protest Journalists (CPJ) had voiced concerns for Al-Sharif’s safety in July, stating that he feared for his life after being targeted in an Israeli military smear campaign they believed could lead to his assassination. Since the start of the conflict nearly two years ago, CPJ reports that 186 journalists have been killed in Israeli strikes.

The United Nations expressed concern over Israel’s charges against Al-Sharif, stating, “I am deeply alarmed by repeated threats and accusations of the Israeli army against Anas Al-Sharif.” Irene Khan, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression, voiced her alarm two weeks prior to the incident.

Al-Sharif, who was married with two children, left a final message for his colleagues in case of his death, which was shared posthumously. He wrote, “I urge you not to be silenced by chains, nor to be hindered by borders, and to be bridges towards the liberation of the land and its people, until the sun of dignity and freedom shines upon our occupied homeland.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
