Ford Announces $5 Billion Investment in Electric Vehicle Production, Unveiling New Design for a More Affordable EV Pickup
Ford unveils a $5 billion investment strategy in electric vehicle (EV) production, likening it to their groundbreaking Model T era. This substantial investment will be allocated towards the establishment of a new assembly line and battery production facilities for EV manufacturing, including a yet-unnamed model that Ford anticipates will become the most economical electric pickup truck on the market.
According to announcements made Monday, this commitment will secure or create approximately 4,000 jobs within the US. Doug Field, Ford’s Chief Officer for Electrification and Digital Systems, stated, “We draw inspiration from the Model T – a universal automobile that revolutionized the world. Today marks a pivotal moment for Ford Motor Company and the automotive industry.”
Approximately $2 billion of this investment will safeguard 2,200 hourly jobs at Ford’s Louisville assembly plant, as they transition towards manufacturing the company’s next generation of electric vehicles. However, the shift from gas-powered SUV production to EV manufacturing may result in approximately 600 job reductions due to increased efficiency and potential reduction in vehicle production numbers.
Remaining jobs and investments will be allocated to a battery plant in Michigan, with plans already underway since 2023.
Ford’s latest announcement follows a trend of substantial investments in US operations by automakers amidst escalating tariffs on imports and demands for domestic manufacturing by the current administration. Ford currently produces more vehicles domestically than any other automaker, yet it has no plans to relocate production of its electric model, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, from a plant in Cuautitlan, Mexico.
Ford’s announcement also introduces a new battery design that will be more compact and lighter compared to previous versions. This innovation enables Ford to offer a new EV pickup at an estimated $30,000 price point, making it one of the most affordable options available. In contrast, the starting price for the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup is approximately $55,000. The new production line is expected to commence operations in 2027.
However, the Trump administration has abolished federal government support for electric vehicles by discontinuing tax credits for buyers and rolling back emissions regulations introduced by the current administration. Currently, Ford experiences losses in its EV segment, with a $2.2 billion deficit recorded during the first half of this year despite an almost threefold increase in EV revenue compared to last year.
The most significant change will be the modification of Ford’s assembly line design, which has remained linear since its inception by Henry Ford on the first auto assembly line in 1913. The new design will employ a tree layout, with multiple lines feeding vehicle components into one another. This innovative layout is expected to reduce costs while enhancing production speed and ease of work for assembly line workers.
