Three Dead in Target Parking Lot Shooting: Austin Sees Tragic Incident Amidst Back-to-School Shopping Chaos
In Austin, Texas, a tragic incident unfolded on Monday afternoon when a gunman opened fire in a Target parking lot, leaving at least three individuals – including a child – dead. The suspect, a White male in his 30s with a documented history of mental health issues and previous criminal offenses, remains unidentified by authorities.
The shooting occurred around 2:15 p.m., with police arriving at the scene shortly afterwards. Upon their arrival, they discovered three individuals with gunshot wounds. Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries on the spot, while a third individual died later at the hospital. A fourth person was also treated for non-gunshot related injuries.
Among the deceased, one victim was confirmed to be a child, while the remaining two were adults. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed by authorities.
Following the shooting, the suspect was apprehended approximately 20 miles away in south Austin. He was taken into custody after being tasered by police. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis expressed her condolences, stating, “This is a very sad day for Austin.”
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson condemned the incident, calling it a “sickening, cowardly act of gun violence.” He further emphasized his sympathies, stating, “My heart is with the victims and their families.”
Target issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the violence that occurred at their Austin store. They are currently cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation. The shooting took place during a busy period for the city, with back-to-school shopping underway for many families.
Eyewitness Lonnie Lee, 22, visited the Target with her sister and was shocked to find the parking lot cordoned off and filled with police. She expressed relief that she and her sister had left the store moments before the shooting.
At a Jiffy Lube shop sharing its parking lot with the Target, employees locked the doors as soon as they were informed of the shooting. An employee at the oil change store, Paul Smith, reported seeing people running from their cars in a state of panic.
This tragedy in Austin is reminiscent of an attack that occurred just over two weeks ago in a Walmart parking lot in Traverse City, Michigan. In that incident, 42-year-old Bradford James Gille allegedly stabbed 11 individuals in what authorities described as “random acts.” All victims are expected to survive, and Gille has been charged with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder.
