Gunman’s Rampage in Austin Target Parking Lot Leaves Three Dead, Including a Child

In a tragic turn of events, three individuals, including a child, lost their lives in Austin, Texas, following a shooting incident that occurred in a Target parking lot on Monday afternoon. The perpetrator, a man in his 30s with a history of mental health issues and prior criminal offenses, is currently in police custody.

The authorities have yet to disclose the suspect’s name. The motive behind the shooting remains undetermined, and it’s unclear what precipitated the gunfire.

The shooting marks another unfortunate episode in the escalating trend of deadly gun violence in the United States. Recent weeks have witnessed similar incidents at seemingly safe locations such as a Montana bar, the headquarters of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, and an office building in New York City.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis reported that her department received a call at 2:15 p.m., and upon arrival at the Target parking lot, they discovered three individuals who had been shot. The shooting occurred during a bustling time of year for retailers, as back-to-school shopping was underway.

Two of the victims died on-site, while a third passed away at the hospital. A fourth individual sustained injuries unrelated to gunshots. One of the deceased adults was a child, according to Captain Shannon Koesterer, a public information officer for the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

The suspect fled the Target parking lot by stealing a vehicle from the scene, subsequently crashing it and seizing a second car from a nearby Volkswagen dealership. The man was apprehended approximately 20 miles south of Austin after someone contacted the police, who subdued him using a taser.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis expressed her condolences, stating, “This is a very sad day for Austin. My sympathies are with the families of the victims.” She refrained from disclosing the identities of the deceased.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson denounced the shooting as a “sickening act of gun violence.” In a statement on his official social media account, he expressed his concern for the victims and their families.

Target Corporation issued a statement expressing sorrow over the incident and stated that they are cooperating with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.

Lonnie Lee, a 22-year-old visitor to the Target, was taken aback when she saw the parking lot cordoned off and filled with police officers. “We got incredibly lucky,” Lee said. “Unfortunately, not everyone did.”

Employees at a neighboring Jiffy Lube shop locked their doors as soon as they became aware of the shooting. Paul Smith, an employee at the oil-change store, recounted seeing people rushing from their vehicles in panic.

This incident follows a stabbing attack in a Walmart parking lot in Traverse City, Michigan, less than two weeks ago, during which 42-year-old Bradford James Gille allegedly attacked eleven individuals in what authorities described as “random acts.” The victims, ranging in age from 29 to 84, are expected to recover, and Gille has been charged with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder.

This report will be updated as more details become available.
