Texas Democrats Deliberate on Extending Exile Amid GOP Push for New Congressional Map

Texas Democratic legislators are currently engaging in a closed-door meeting, deliberating on their future course of action as they ponder how long to remain absent from the state and obstruct a new congressional map proposal. Sources familiar with the caucus informed CNN that no definitive decision has been reached regarding their return to Texas.

The discussions come amid indications from Texas Republicans that they plan to conclude the current special session on Friday, promptly following which they intend to call for a new one, with the aim of pushing through a fresh map that could potentially secure an additional five House seats for them.

Two individuals privy to the meeting have shared with CNN, on condition of anonymity, that no decision has been made regarding their return to Texas. However, they are weighing the potential benefits of prolonging their self-imposed absence from the state.

“Texas Democrats are exploring every feasible strategy to safeguard our constitution and democracy,” Rep. John Bucy stated in a statement to CNN on Tuesday. “Members are gathering over the subsequent week to deliberate on our strategy and monitor developments at home. We have consistently maintained that we are prepared to return home if the governor prioritizes people over politics. The initiative lies with the governor.”
