Texas House Democrats Agree to Return, Conditionally Ending Redistricting Standoff as They Prepare Legal Challenges Against GOP-Proposed Maps

Texas House Democratic legislators signaled on Thursday they are poised to conclude their impasse over redistricting and rejoin the state.

In a statement, the lawmakers stipulated their return under two conditions: the adjournment of Texas House Republicans’ first special session, scheduled for Friday, and California initiating plans to revise congressional maps within their jurisdiction. California Governor Gavin Newsom is due to address these plans at an imminent press conference.

The exact timing of their return remains uncertain. However, the statement suggests they are eager to terminate a nearly two-week standoff aimed at thwarting Texas Republicans’ redistricting efforts that could potentially grant the GOP up to five additional US House seats.

“Texas House Democrats successfully hindered Republican attempts to advance voting rights restrictions targeting minorities,” remarked Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu in a statement.

Upon their return, Texas House Democrats have pledged to focus on the House floor, where lawmakers would engage in debate and voting on the bill. In a press release Thursday, the caucus revealed they would challenge the bill on the House floor, as well as pursue legal actions against the Republican-proposed maps.

“As Democrats nationwide rally behind our efforts to scupper these maps’ political objectives, we stand ready to resume this struggle under favorable conditions and take it to the courts,” Wu added.
