Nationwide Protests Against Trump-Backed Congressional Map Redrawing Sweep 34 States Today

Across various locations nationwide, including parks, coffee shops, churches, and government buildings, protests are scheduled today to voice a unified message: “Halting the Political Shift.”

These demonstrations aim to counter Republican-led initiatives aimed at redrawing congressional district maps. The focal point of these rallies will be Texas, where a proposed congressional map supported by President Donald Trump could potentially secure five additional seats for Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections. This development has prompted Texas’ Democratic lawmakers to temporarily vacate the state, preventing the necessary quorum to vote.

The Texas for All Coalition, which is helping coordinate these events, stated in a press release that “President Trump is apprehensive about the American people… He knows he cannot win on his ideas, so he’s attempting to capture Congress through underhanded means – primarily by suppressing the voices of racially and ethnically diverse communities. We will not allow this.”

Organizers emphasized a commitment to nonviolence at all events as detailed in their event descriptions. Over 200 protests are planned in 34 states, according to the official website for these rallies. The Democratic National Committee has also announced its involvement in organizing these events.

“From coast to coast, people will gather at statehouses, city halls, and community spaces to convey a clear message – we recognize what Trump is doing, and we will not tolerate it,” said the DNC.

A variety of nonprofits and organizations are backing this effort, including Planned Parenthood, the Working Families Party, and the Human Rights Campaign.

At the White House, President Trump described the proposed Texas congressional map as a “straightforward redrawing” and claimed that it would yield five additional seats for Republicans. However, similar initiatives are not limited to Texas. Republican leaders in other states, such as Missouri, Florida, and Ohio, have also proposed modifying their congressional maps ahead of the 2022 midterms.

Democratic lawmakers have pledged to fight back against these changes, with California Governor Gavin Newsom launching his own redistricting campaign on Thursday.

The largest protest is scheduled in Austin, Texas, where over a thousand people have RSVPed for the event, which will commence at the state capitol. Former Congressman Beto O’Rourke, United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, Democratic US Rep. Greg Casar, and Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas are among the speakers expected to address the crowd, according to a press release from the Texas for All Coalition.

Drag queen Brigitte Bandit and singer Gina Chavez are also set to perform at this event. Across Texas, additional events are planned in cities such as Houston, Dallas, San Angelo, Tyler, McAllen, Conroe, and Kingwood.

Protests and rallies are scheduled in numerous other states, including both Democratic strongholds and Republican-majority regions. Local organizers are coordinating city-specific events.

In New York City, demonstrators are expected to gather in Central Park. In Washington, DC, where National Guard troops have been deployed and the local police department has been taken under federal control, organizers are creating banners and signs to be displayed throughout the city.

Protesters in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina, plan to form a “bridge brigade,” holding signs on 16 different bridges.

Demonstrations are also planned in Cincinnati, Ohio; Sarasota, Florida; and Jefferson City, Missouri, among other cities. The scheduled events include rallies, educational sessions, banner drops, and art projects at locations that include a bookstore in Jacksonville, Florida, and a Tesla showroom in Palo Alto, California.

These demonstrations follow a series of protests organized since Trump’s second inauguration in January, including the “No Kings” protests in June and demonstrations against the president’s immigration enforcement policies in July.

Drucilla Tigner, the executive director of statewide coalition Texas For All, stated in a press release that this struggle transcends Texas.

“Across Texas, and across the country, communities are uniting their voices to demand an end to the political shift,” she said. “Though this fight began in Texas, it does not conclude here. This is not just about redistricting or one state’s politics.”

“It’s about the future of our democracy.”
