Newsmax Agrees to Pay $67 Million in Settlement over False 2020 Election Rigging Claims against Dominion Voting Systems
News organization Newsmax has agreed to a $67 million settlement in a defamation lawsuit over broadcasting unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 election was fraudulent. The lawsuit, filed by voting technology company Dominion Voting Systems, accused Newsmax of promoting false conspiracy theories about Dominion’s supposed links to foreign dictators and allegations that its equipment could be easily manipulated to alter vote results.
The settlement, announced in an August 15 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, saw Newsmax pay $27 million on the day of the announcement, with the remaining balance due by January 2027. The original lawsuit was filed in the wake of the 2020 election, following claims made by former Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell and Mike Lindell, a supporter of My Pillow, on Newsmax’s network.
Dominion Voting Systems had previously reached a $787 million settlement with Fox News over similar defamatory statements regarding the 2020 election. A trial in this case was scheduled to commence in October. Further details about the terms of the settlement between Newsmax and Dominion are not yet available.
