Myanmar Holds Contested General Election Amidst Ongoing Civil War and Opposition Boycotts

Myanmar’s military has unveiled plans for a multi-phase general election, set to commence on December 28, with subsequent phases tentatively scheduled for January. The elections, according to state media, will span over three days and cover over 300 constituencies nationwide, including regions under rebel control.

The announcement follows the military coup in 2021, which has since plunged the country into conflict, resulting in thousands of casualties, millions displaced, and ongoing civil war. Critics view these elections as an effort by the junta to bolster its legitimacy.

However, the logistics of holding elections amidst opposition control could pose significant challenges due to the ongoing conflict. The National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, has been barred from participation in these elections, while numerous other groups have vowed not to participate, further casting doubt on the election’s credibility.
