Trump Administration Announces Plans to Paint Southern Border Wall Black for Increased Deterrence

In a press conference held in Santa Teresa, New Mexico on Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed plans to paint the southern border wall black. The change aims to make the structure unclimbable due to its heat absorption properties in hot temperatures, as per President Donald Trump’s request.

During the event, Noem stood before the slatted steel barrier and explained that its height already makes climbing difficult, if not impossible. Additionally, the wall’s underground foundation would make digging under it challenging or impractical. The new black paint will further deter potential climbers, as it retains heat in the region’s high temperatures, making the surface even hotter to touch.

US Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks added that the black paint would also help prevent rust on the steel wall.

The decision to paint the wall comes amidst a decline in border apprehensions, with June seeing just over 6,000 incidents, a 15% decrease from the previous record in March. The southern border wall was a significant aspect of President Trump’s immigration policy during his first term, and while he is now in his second term, the focus has shifted towards deportations and increased enforcement within US borders.

The cost of painting the wall remains undisclosed. However, the administration secured approximately $46.5 billion in funding through the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” to modernize the border barrier system, including the construction of 700 miles of primary wall. Currently, government crews are constructing around half a mile of barrier per day.

Noem mentioned that the appearance of the border wall will vary depending on its specific location and surrounding terrain. Furthermore, she highlighted the department’s deployment of “water-borne infrastructure” and advanced technology such as cameras and sensors.
