Illegal U-Turn by Indian Truck Driver Leads to Fatal Accident and Controversy over Immigration Permits
In a recent development, a commercial vehicle operator facing charges of causing a fatal collision that claimed three lives in Florida last week has been remanded without bond.
The tragic incident has instigated a contentious debate between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and California Governor Gavin Newsom over whether the accused, Harjinder Singh, an Indian national, was lawfully permitted to work and drive in the state during his time in the country. The federal administration maintains that Singh was unlawfully present in the United States.
Singh has been indicted on three counts of vehicular homicide by the state authorities and immigration-related charges. He remains in custody at the St. Lucie County Jail, according to Lt. Andrew Bolonka from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on him.
Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin characterized the issuance of a commercial license to an individual residing in the country illegally as “absurd.” California, along with 18 other states and the District of Columbia, grants driving licenses irrespective of immigration status. Proponents argue that this policy allows people to work safely, access medical care, and travel without fear.
California’s press office responded on platform X that Singh had obtained a work permit during Donald Trump’s tenure as president, a claim disputed by McLaughlin.
Florida authorities revealed that Singh illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico in 2018.
Following the incident, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis assigned Lt. Gov. Jay Collins to escort Singh back to California for deportation proceedings, which occurred on Thursday.
The collision took place when Singh allegedly performed an unlawful U-turn on a highway approximately 50 miles north of West Palm Beach. A minivan in the adjacent lane was unable to avoid colliding with the truck’s trailer, resulting in the death of the minivan’s driver and two passengers. Neither Singh nor his passenger sustained injuries during the crash.
