Woody Allen Defends Moscow Film Festival Appearance Amidst Ukrainian Government Criticism

Renowned filmmaker Woody Allen has stood firm amidst criticism from Ukraine’s government over his attendance at the Moscow International Film Week.

In a statement sent to CNN, Allen expressed his stance on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating, “I firmly believe that President Vladimir Putin’s actions are misguided. The war he has instigated is deplorable.”

However, Allen argued against severing artistic connections as a means of resolution, asserting, “Whatever political decisions have been made, I don’t feel it’s beneficial to halt creative dialogue.”

The Ukrainian government voiced its disapproval of Allen’s role as a headline guest at the event earlier on Monday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning his participation, saying, “Woody Allen’s involvement in the Moscow International Film Week is an affront and an insult to the sacrifices made by Ukrainian actors and filmmakers who have been killed or injured by Russian military aggression in Ukraine.”

The festival, sponsored by Russian state media, state-owned companies, and the Moscow City Government, hosted Allen via video link in a conversation with Russian director Fyodor Bondarchuk, a known ally of Putin who has publicly supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

During the session, Allen reportedly praised Russian cinema, citing the Soviet version of “War and Peace” directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, Fyodor’s father. Russian media outlets reported that Allen expressed positive feelings towards Moscow and St. Petersburg during the discussion.

Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev interpreted Allen’s appearance at the festival as a testament to Russia’s non-isolation, stating on social media, “Attempting to boycott Woody Allen over a virtual appearance at the Moscow International Film Festival overlooks the fact: Russia isn’t isolated – and art should foster connections, not divide.”
