California Parents Arrested for Murder and False Reporting After Allegedly Faking Infant Kidnapping

In the small town of Yucaipa, California, a distressing incident unfolded on August 14 that sent shockwaves through the community. Rebecca Haro, a mother of a seven-month-old baby named Emmanuel, reported to the police that she was assaulted and lost consciousness outside a sporting goods store while changing her baby’s diaper. Upon awakening, she discovered Emmanuel missing.

The reported kidnapping sparked an immediate response from law enforcement agencies, who mobilized all available resources to find the infant. The news spread quickly, leading to an outpouring of public concern and support for the Haro family. Parents Rebecca and Jake Haro, along with concerned community members, joined search parties in the days following the incident.

In a heart-wrenching plea to CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS, Rebecca Haro begged for Emmanuel’s safe return, holding up a “Missing Child” flyer that displayed a photo of her baby, along with their contact information. “Please don’t hurt him,” she said through tears. “Protect him and just bring him back to his parents who love him.”

However, within 24 hours of the initial report, inconsistencies in the couple’s story began to surface. Just over a week later, Jake Haro, 32, and Rebecca Haro, 41, were arrested at their home in Cabazon on charges of murder and making a false police report.

According to a criminal complaint, Emmanuel was believed to have been killed during a nine-day period leading up to the reported disappearance. The Riverside County Public Defender’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and an arraignment for the pair is scheduled for September 4.

On Wednesday, officials held a press conference to provide further details about the case and clarify the facts surrounding the reported kidnapping. Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin stated, “It’s appropriate to have a press conference because it was the defendants in this case who had a press conference first, and they did so in order to tell the public, the media, and ultimately law enforcement that their child had been kidnapped, when in fact that’s not what occurred.”

As of now, Emmanuel’s remains have yet to be found, but investigators have a “pretty strong indication” of the location. Hestrin told CNN during the press conference that there were signs of abuse, and the child succumbed to his injuries over time.

Investigations revealed that Rebecca Haro, who was sporting a black eye after the incident, could not provide a clear account of what happened. Notably, authorities did not issue an Amber Alert in this case, as they became skeptical of the reported kidnapping. Rebecca Haro declined to continue with interviews when confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement.

Investigators searched the Haro’s home and used K9s in their search, obtaining surveillance video along the way. Authorities could not rule out foul play. After days of investigation, it was determined that a kidnapping did not occur in Yucaipa, and the search for Emmanuel’s remains is ongoing.

The Haro parents were arrested last Friday, August 22, and were booked into separate Riverside County jails. There are no other suspects, and each is being held on $1 million bail. Investigators, accompanied by Jake Haro and cadaver dogs, searched for baby Emmanuel off the freeway near Gilman Springs Road in Moreno Valley on Sunday, but the infant was not found.

Sheriff Shannon Dicus expressed sympathy for the circumstances surrounding the investigation, stating, “The circumstances surrounding this investigation are tragic, and we will continue to search for Emmanuel. I trust our justice system will hold the parents accountable.” San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus added that there is “some level of cooperation” with the suspects, and their job is to follow every lead.
