Massive Russian Attack on Kyiv Kills 10, Wounds 48, Escalating Tensions as Peace Efforts Stall
In the heart of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, a devastating drone and missile assault occurred early Thursday morning, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and 48 injuries, according to local authorities. This marks the first significant Russian combined attack on Kyiv in weeks amidst ongoing U.S.-led peace negotiations aimed at ending the three-year conflict.
Two children were among the deceased, as reported by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, with the casualty count anticipated to rise. Rescue teams are currently working diligently to free individuals trapped beneath the debris.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his dismay on social media following the attack, stating, “Russia opts for weapons instead of dialogue.” He urged global response from those advocating peace, yet often remain silent, as opposed to taking decisive stances.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s city administration, disclosed that Russia launched decoy drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. Impacts were reported at over 20 locations across seven districts of Kyiv, causing damage to nearly 100 buildings, including a shopping mall in the city center, and shattering thousands of windows.
The central part of Kyiv was struck by Russian attacks, an occurrence that’s rare since the onset of the full-scale invasion. Residents worked tirelessly to clear damaged buildings of shattered glass and debris.
Sophia Akylina shared her account of a damaged home, stating, “It’s unprecedented that they attacked so close.” Unfortunately, negotiations have yet to yield any progress, leaving civilians to suffer.
Smoke billowed from the remnants of a five-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district, which sustained a direct hit. Firefighters battled the resulting blaze while searching for survivors and recovering bodies from the wreckage. Families gathered nearby, anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones trapped in the rubble.
The Darnytskyi district was not a first-time target for Russian strikes, as neighborhood residents confirmed. Oleksandr Khilko rushed to the scene after a missile struck the residential building where his sister resides. He managed to rescue three survivors, including a boy, from beneath the debris.
“This is inhumane,” Khilko expressed, his clothing soiled with dust and fingers tipped with soot. “I long for this war to end as soon as possible. I wait, but every air raid alarm sends shivers down my spine.”
Ukraine’s national railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, reported infrastructure damage in the Vinnytsia and Kyiv regions, causing delays and necessitating trains to utilize alternative routes.
The assault on Thursday represents the first major combined Russian mass drone and missile attack to strike Kyiv since U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month in Alaska, discussing an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
Although a diplomatic push to resolve the war seemed to gain momentum after the meeting, few details regarding subsequent steps have surfaced. Western leaders accuse Putin of procrastinating peace efforts and avoiding substantial negotiations while Russian troops advance deeper into Ukraine. This week, Ukrainian military leaders admitted that Russian forces had penetrated an eighth region of Ukraine, aiming to capture additional territory.
Zelenskyy calls for tougher U.S. sanctions to cripple the Russian economy if Putin fails to demonstrate seriousness about ending the war. He reiterated these demands following Thursday’s attack.
“All deadlines have already been breached, countless opportunities for diplomacy wasted,” Zelenskyy stated. Trump voiced frustration this week over Putin’s reluctance to engage in direct peace talks with Zelenskyy and expects to make a decision on the next steps within two weeks if such negotiations are not scheduled.
