Rare Left-Spiral Garden Snail Sparks Nationwide Search for Love in New Zealand

In the verdant landscapes of New Zealand, an unusual love story unfolds as a solitary snail named Ned embarks on a quest for companionship.

Ned’s romantic interest lies in another mollusk, but finding a compatible partner has transformed into a nationwide pursuit due to a unique genetic anomaly. Ned possesses a left-spiraling shell, which is rare among the common corno espersum or garden snails, occurring in one out of 40,000 specimens. This condition renders his reproductive organs incompatible with most others due to their right-spiraling shells.

Giselle Clarkson, an author, illustrator, and self-proclaimed ‘observologist’, made the fortuitous discovery of Ned while tending her garden in Wairarapa, just north of Wellington.

“I was momentarily astounded,” recounts Clarkson to CNN. “While pulling out a plant, a snail tumbled into the earth, and I was about to discard it when I realized its unusual nature.”

This serendipitous encounter led to Ned’s moniker, inspired by Homer Simpson’s left-handed neighbor. Aware of this rare asymmetry in snails through her work with New Zealand Geographic, Clarkson felt compelled to offer Ned a home, protecting him from avian predators as he awaits his first date.

To aid Ned, Clarkson has called upon citizens young and old across New Zealand to embrace ‘observology’—a term she coined to describe the practice of keen observation. Through her book, Clarkson aims to inspire budding naturalists and foster a connection with nature by honing observational skills.

“The essence of this endeavor is encouraging people to forge brief, yet meaningful connections with nature through focused attention,” explains Clarkson. “The more one pays heed to the everyday, the greater the likelihood of noticing the extraordinary or rare occurrences.”

Ned’s romantic prospects now rest in the hands of New Zealanders who engage in observing and appreciating the natural world around them, with a newfound focus on often-overlooked creatures. Clarkson believes that this renewed love for nature will enhance Ned’s chances of finding his perfect match.

“I am optimistic about Ned’s prospects,” says Clarkson. “Physical compatibility may be assured when they meet, but the success of their relationship depends on their shared personalities.”
