Russia Launches ‘Massive Attack’ on Kyiv: At Least 12 Killed Including Three Children
In the early hours of the morning, Kyiv experienced a significant attack by Russia, resulting in at least 12 fatalities, including three minors aged 2, 17, and 14. This information was confirmed by Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.
Among the casualties were children, a tragic reminder of the ongoing conflict. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the Russian military launched 629 air attack weapons consisting of 598 drones and 31 missiles towards Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern over the number of wounded and potential trapped individuals under debris, while also addressing the international community regarding the escalating conflict. He emphasized that these attacks were a direct response to global appeals for a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution.
Ukrainian authorities mobilized approximately 500 rescuers and 1,000 police officers to manage various incidents, including one at a building housing the European Union mission in Ukraine. The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the victims and affected staff members.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Russia of breaching international diplomatic conventions by targeting diplomats. He called for global denunciation of these actions.
Rescue efforts in Kyiv involved various resources, including mountaineers, dog handlers, psychologists, engineering equipment, fire and rescue apparatus, and robotic technology to expedite the process. Residents were advised to seek shelter during the attack, which lasted over nine hours and involved ballistic and cruise missiles.
A series of attacks on Kyiv represents the latest escalation in a week-long offensive by Russian troops, who have captured two villages in Ukraine’s southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region as reported by Ukrainian open-source researchers. The capture of Zaporizke and Novoheorhiivka has further strained diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
Ukraine’s military, outnumbered and outgunned, continues to struggle against Russian advances in much of the east as Moscow applies pressure on Kyiv to cede territory in any potential peace agreement. Zelensky emphasized Russia’s disregard for international consequences in his message following the latest attacks.
Tkachenko analyzed the Kremlin’s attack pattern, which often includes combined assaults from various directions and targeting residential buildings as a signature tactic. Decoy missiles were used to confuse Ukrainian defense systems, according to the military chief.
Several high-rise residential buildings, a kindergarten, private properties, offices, transport infrastructure, and numerous vehicles sustained damage in the attack, officials reported. The extent of the destruction is expected to exceed hundreds of damaged facilities with thousands of broken windows, including a shopping center located in the city center.
