Minneapolis Community Mourns at Vigils After Deadly School Shooting; Calls for Change Amplify Across City

In Minneapolis, numerous vigils were held last night to honor the young lives lost in a devastating school shooting, an all-too-common tragedy that has once again gripped American communities. The shooting occurred at the Church of the Annunciation, where students from Annunciation Catholic School had gathered for Mass to mark the start of a new academic year.

According to police reports, a 23-year-old gunman opened fire through the church windows, resulting in the tragic deaths of two children aged 8 and 10, and injuring fourteen other students and three elderly parishioners. This incident marks yet another grim entry on the list of school shootings in the US this year, with CNN reporting that it is the 44th such incident recorded so far. It also adds to the staggering total of at least 286 mass shootings in the country this year, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive.

The shooting in Minneapolis represents the fourth deadly shooting within a 24-hour period in the city. The grief-laden atmosphere was palpable at vigils attended by parents and community members, many of whom have been deeply affected by this tragedy that hit close to home.

One such individual is Kaliee Poling, who as a child attended Annunciation Catholic School and now, as a parent, struggles to comprehend the ordeal faced by the students during the shooting. She attended a vigil in nearby Richfield alongside her husband and daughter, expressing the overwhelming sense of grief that hung heavy in the air.

Similarly, Laura Pueringer, an alumna of Blessed Trinity – a sister school to Annunciation – was deeply moved when she saw students in their uniforms during coverage of the shooting. The sight took her back to her own childhood days at the school. She spoke of her desire to demand change and stand together for the safety of children, echoing the sentiments of many in the community.

Vincent Francoual shared his concerns about his daughter’s recovery from the traumatic experience she endured during the shooting. He emphasized the importance of community support in helping her heal and move forward. “We are taking it one day at a time,” he said, expressing faith in the resilience of Annunciation School’s strong community.

At a vigil held in Lynnhurt Park, parents and children stood united, many wearing red shirts bearing the slogan “Protect Minnesota” – a coalition dedicated to combating gun violence. The gathering was addressed by Mayor Jacob Frey, who commended the courageous actions of teachers and faculty at Annunciation who shielded students from harm.

Frey urged the community to transition from grief to action, emphasizing the need for stricter gun control measures. “We are a city united in grief,” he said. “Let us take the next step to be a city united in action.”

Minneapolis Councilmember Emily Koski voiced concerns shared by many parents, expressing her disbelief that such an incident could occur at a place once considered safe for children. She added that the promising year ahead, which the students had been eagerly anticipating, was cruelly taken away from them during the shooting.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) abruptly adjourned its summer meeting in Minneapolis following news of the tragedy, which unfolded mere minutes away. DNC Chair Ken Martin, a Minnesota native, acknowledged the loss of Melissa and Mark Hortman – former Minnesota House speaker and her husband, who were killed in a politically motivated shooting at their home in June.

Governor Tim Walz praised law enforcement for their “heroic work” and commended President Donald Trump’s decision to order flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Sunday in honor of the victims. Walz called for thoughts and prayers, but also urged action to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

The Vatican released a statement expressing Pope Leo XIV’s deep sadness over the deaths and injuries resulting from the mass shooting. The tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stricter gun control measures in the United States, a topic that continues to generate heated debate among policymakers and the public alike.
