E3 Countries Trigger Snapback Sanctions Against Iran Over Nuclear Program Breaches
Three nations – France, Germany, and the United Kingdom – have initiated the process to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran due to its ongoing nuclear program violations. This decision follows the breakdown of diplomatic efforts aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear expansion, with Tehran issuing warnings about potential repercussions.
The E3 (France, Germany, and the UK) notified the United Nations Security Council on Thursday that they were activating the snapback mechanism, a provision incorporated in the 2015 Iran Nuclear Agreement. Since President Donald Trump’s withdrawal of the US from the agreement in 2018, Iran has repeatedly breached the terms of the deal.
The snapback process spans over 30 days, allowing Iran an opportunity to act and prevent the reinstatement of these sanctions. The expiration of the snapback sanction triggering ability in October 2025 prompted the E3’s decision at this time.
A British official stated on Thursday that the decision was not taken lightly. The E3 made the decision due to Iran’s significant noncompliance with the 2015 agreement, its accumulation of highly enriched uranium, and what they described as a lack of “adequate response” from Iran to reach a diplomatic resolution.
Despite this escalation, European officials remain hopeful that Iran will engage in diplomatic discussions during the 30-day period. The official emphasized, “We don’t consider this the end of diplomacy, and we continue to support a negotiated solution.”
This situation is currently evolving and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
