Surf Abu Dhabi Unveils World’s Longest Artificial Wave, Aiming to Revolutionize Global Surf Tourism

Located in the heart of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi is now home to the world’s longest artificial surf wave, marking a significant milestone for the city’s ambition to become a global surfing destination. Surf Abu Dhabi, which opened in October 2024, offers an unprecedented surfing experience with waves that can be ridden for up to a minute on a 755-yard (690-meter) long pool.

Unlike traditional wave pools that use freshwater, Surf Abu Dhabi is filled with 80 million liters of seawater from the Arabian Gulf, giving it a unique saltier quality. The water is slightly desalinated to ensure optimal surfing conditions. The wave is generated by an underwater wing dragged down the pool by pulleys, creating a perfectly shaped break through careful bathymetry design—a patented feature at Surf Abu Dhabi.

The technology behind this revolutionary wave was developed by Kelly Slater, the most successful professional surfer in history, and Adam Fincham, a fluid mechanics specialist from the University of Southern California. The project, while mathematically complex, resulted in the creation of the perfect surfing wave, first unveiled at the Surf Ranch in California in 2015.

In 2016, World Surf League Holdings, the parent company of the professional surfing competition, bought the Kelly Slater Wave Company and has since scheduled events at both the Surf Ranch pool and Surf Abu Dhabi’s pool. The concept of a perfect wave gained popularity through the iconic 1966 documentary “The Endless Summer,” which showcased two surfers chasing the perfect wave around the world, culminating in their discovery at Cape St. Francis in South Africa.

Surf Abu Dhabi offers a consistent and high-quality surfing experience that attracts international visitors seeking to ride the world’s best waves. The facility only allows four surfers at a time on the intermediate and advanced wave, with each paying AED3500 ($950) for six guaranteed rides. For those looking for a more private session, Surf Abu Dhabi offers 90-minute pool rentals at AED20,000 ($5,450).

The global surf tourism industry is projected to reach $95.93 billion by 2030, and facilities like Surf Abu Dhabi aim to capture the luxury market by offering an exclusive and unparalleled surfing experience. However, they face the challenge of convincing customers that their wave pool offers a superior experience compared to surfing in the ocean.

Luxury surf travel businesses such as Mahalo Surf Experience cater to time-starved professionals seeking consistent and predictable waves. These clients often have the means to pay exorbitant prices for last-minute trips to find the best conditions, with four-day trips starting at around $150,000.

Increasingly, these clients are turning to wave pools to hone their skills and prepare for ocean surfing. Wave pools provide a controlled environment that allows for focused practice and skill development. Surf Abu Dhabi serves as a popular warm-up destination on the way to renowned surfing destinations like the Maldives or Indonesia.

Despite the convenience and consistency offered by wave pools, they cannot replicate the natural charm and unpredictability of ocean surfing. Luxury surf travel businesses such as Mahalo Surf Experience emphasize the connection with nature and the rhythm of the ocean that comes from surfing in the wild waves. Wave pools offer a more controlled experience, which some argue takes away from the essence of surfing.

Regardless, wave pools like Surf Abu Dhabi represent a significant step forward for the surfing industry, offering a consistent and high-quality surfing experience that caters to a growing market of time-starved professionals seeking luxury surfing opportunities. The facility’s patented technology promises a unique surfing experience unlike any other, making it an attractive destination for both seasoned surfers and A-list celebrities.
