Trump Official Refers Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook for Criminal Investigation over Alleged Mortgage Fraud
A high-ranking official from the Trump administration’s Department of Housing has submitted a fresh criminal referral to the Justice Department against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, following her legal action against the administration to contest President Trump’s decision to dismiss her.
The latest criminal referral, filed late Thursday and disclosed on social media by Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) director Bill Pulte, accuses Cook of misrepresenting a property in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a secondary residence on official documents. However, it is alleged that she used the property for investment purposes instead.
As the first African American woman to serve as a Federal Reserve governor, Cook has initiated a lawsuit contesting her recent dismissal by President Trump. The hearing for this lawsuit is scheduled for Friday morning.
Previously, the US Federal Housing Finance Agency had submitted a criminal referral alleging that Cook had committed mortgage fraud by securing mortgages for two separate properties – one in Michigan and another in Georgia – and stating on both mortgage applications that they would be her primary residence.
Cook’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Friday.
