Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Signs Controversial Redistricting Bill Aimed at Shifting Congressional Seats to Republicans

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas signed a redistricting bill into law on Friday, a move that finalizes a new congressional map championed by President Donald Trump prior to the 2026 midterm elections.

In a social media post, Abbott stated, “Today, I signed the One Big Beautiful Map into law. This map aims to provide fairer representation in Congress, making Texas more Republican in the U.S. House.” The post features a video of him signing the bill with a black Sharpie.

The bill’s enactment concludes a weeks-long effort to implement the new congressional map, which the Republican party anticipates could gain them an additional five seats in the U.S. House.

Initially, Texas Democrats had left the state to prevent the state House from achieving a quorum. However, they returned following appearances with leaders of Democratic-led states, advocating for redistricting initiatives to counterbalance the Texas map.

On the other hand, California legislators are advancing a proposal to reserve maps drafted by a nonpartisan commission to create five additional seats favorable to Democrats. In a November referendum, Californian voters will decide on whether to approve this plan.

Simultaneously, Texas Democrats are attempting to challenge the map in court. Several lawsuits have already been filed, and a three-judge panel in a US District court in El Paso has scheduled a preliminary injunction hearing for October 1-10.
