In a tragic development, former Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in Lviv on Saturday. Authorities are currently searching for his killer.

President Volodymyr Zelensky took to social media to express his grief over the incident, calling it a “horrendous murder” and offering condolences to Parubiy’s family. Maksym Kozitskiy, head of the Lviv region military administration, confirmed that medical personnel arrived too late to save Parubiy.

The General Prosecutor’s Office has launched a special operation named “Siren” to investigate the killing. An unidentified assailant is believed to have fired several shots at Parubiy and fled the scene.

European officials, including Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, offered their condolences to Parubiy’s loved ones and the people of Ukraine. Metsola described the incident as “deeply shocking.” Officials from Estonia and Poland also paid tribute to the late politician.

Ukrainian MP Iryna Gerashchenko labeled the murder as “terrorism” and remembered Parubiy as a “colleague and friend, a reliable comrade” who was “principled and decent, patriotic, intelligent.”

Former President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, stated that Parubiy was “shot dead by monsters in Lviv.” He expressed that the assassins were afraid and that’s why they killed a true patriot and strong person. Poroshenko added that this crime was not just against a person but against the army, language, faith, and heart of Ukraine.

Poroshenko emphasized that “the enemy will never be able to kill the ideals for which… Parubiy lived and fought.” He concluded by saying, “Ukraine has lost a great son, but his cause will live on as long as our state lives.”
