Kim Jong Un Meets Xi Jinping Amidst Speculation of Alliance Against U.S., Signaling Potential Shift in Diplomatic Relations

In Beijing, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping during celebrations marking the conclusion of World War II. This meeting was confirmed by state media on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Kim participated in a Chinese military parade, joining foreign dignitaries including Russian President Vladimir Putin. The North Korean leader’s presence outside North Korea is relatively uncommon.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun shared that the leaders would engage in comprehensive discussions regarding bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest. He emphasized that Kim’s attendance at the parade and subsequent talks with Xi held significant importance.

Kim, who arrived in Beijing by train on Tuesday, was one of 26 international leaders present for the parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end. This marked his first significant appearance alongside a large gathering of world leaders since assuming office in late 2011.

Accompanying Kim on this visit, his young daughter has sparked speculation about her potential role as the country’s future leader.

Analysts suggest that Kim may aim to rekindle ties with China, North Korea’s primary trading partner and aid provider, due to ongoing questions regarding their relationship.

In recent years, Kim’s foreign policy has largely been focused on Russia. He has provided troops and ammunition in support of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in exchange for economic and military assistance. At a meeting following the parade, Putin commended the valor displayed by North Korean soldiers during combat operations.

However, experts believe Kim may also be preparing for potential outcomes in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Some observers speculate that Kim’s trip could serve to strengthen his negotiating position in potential talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has consistently expressed a desire to reinitiate diplomatic relations between the two nations.

China, being North Korea’s principal trading partner and main aid provider, seeks its neighbor’s return to negotiations and abandonment of nuclear weapons development.

North Korea has recently established contacts with Russia, causing some unease in Beijing, historically North Korea’s most significant ally.

The simultaneous appearance of Kim, Xi, and Putin at the parade has fueled speculation about a collective response to U.S. pressure on the three nations. Trump hinted at such collaboration in a social media post, urging Xi to extend his warmest regards to Putin and Kim “as you collaborate against The United States of America.”

Putin dismissed this notion during a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, stating that no negative sentiments towards the U.S. administration were expressed during his trip to China.

“The President of the United States is known for his sense of humor,” Putin said.

Although China, North Korea, and Russia are currently engaged in separate disputes with the U.S., a formal three-way alliance has yet to materialize.

Zhu Feng, dean of Nanjing University’s School of International Relations, cautioned against overinterpreting the evolving dynamics between China, North Korea, and Russia. “It should not be inferred that China-North Korea-Russia relations will experience strengthening,” he said.
