Zelenskyy Warns of AI-Driven War as He Urges Global Rules to Stop Russia’s Invasion and Spread Across Europe

In a stark warning at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the looming threat of an AI-driven conflict and arms race, urging global leaders to prevent Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s speech followed a shift in U.S. President Trump’s stance in support of Ukraine’s victory against Russia, expressed on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian president emphasized the impending danger of autonomous drone warfare, targeting critical infrastructure and endangering civilians, with minimal human intervention beyond AI system controllers. He called for international regulations on the use of AI in weaponry.

Zelenskyy also raised concerns about potential applications of drones for delivering nuclear warheads, likening the current arms race to the most destructive in human history, due to its incorporation of artificial intelligence.

His remarks were delivered amid escalating apprehension across Europe following Russia’s recent drone incursions into NATO’s eastern member states. These incidents sparked concerns about a potential regional escalation from Russia’s 3 1/2-year-long, full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Zelenskyy stated, “Ukraine serves as the first battleground, and now Russian drones are traversing Europe, with Putin’s operations expanding across various countries, aiming to perpetuate this war.”

In a shift in position on the Ukrainian conflict, President Trump met with Zelenskyy a day prior to the address. Trump expressed his belief that Ukraine, backed by the European Union, could defeat Russia and reclaim its original form.

Previously, Trump and senior administration officials advocated for Kyiv to cede territory to Moscow, such as Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, as a condition for ending the war.

When asked by a journalist if NATO members should shoot down Russian aircraft violating their airspace, President Trump responded affirmatively: “Yes, I do.”
