Mystery Drone Flyovers Disrupt Multiple Airports in Denmark, Raising Security Concerns

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were spotted at multiple airports across Denmark overnight on Wednesday into Thursday, causing temporary disruptions. The affected airports include Aalborg Airport in the north, as well as Esbjerg, Sønderborg, and Skrydstrup airports.

At Aalborg Airport, which also serves as a military base, drone sightings started around 10 p.m. on Wednesday and ended before 1 a.m. Thursday, leading to a halt in flights for several hours. Skrydstrup Air Base, home to some of the Danish military’s fighter jets, was also impacted by these UAV activities.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen suggested that a ‘skilled operator’ may be responsible for the systematic flights, but provided no further details during a press conference on Thursday morning. The authorities assured the public that there was no immediate danger.

Danish Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard stated that the drone flights were intended to instill fear and create divisions within the society. As a response, the country is considering additional measures to counteract the use of drones, including proposing legislation that would allow infrastructure owners to shoot down these UAVs.

This latest incident follows a similar event at Copenhagen Airport just a few days prior, which was also attributed to a ‘capable actor.’ The flights at Copenhagen Airport caused significant delays on Monday night, raising initial concerns that they might be orchestrated by Russia over Scandinavia’s largest airport. However, the connection between these two incidents is yet to be established.
