Trump Accuses U.N. of ‘Triple Sabotage’: Escalator, Teleprompter, and Sound System Malfunctions at UN General Assembly
In a series of events that President Trump has termed as “triple sabotage”, the leader is accusing the United Nations of being partially responsible for technical malfunctions during his speech at the General Assembly. The president took to social media to express his discontent, stating that these incidents were not mere coincidences but deliberate acts of sabotage.
In a post on Wednesday, Trump wrote, “Yesterday at the United Nations, a sequence of sinister events unfolded – not once, not twice, but three times!” He further added, “This wasn’t an accident; this was triple sabotage at the UN. They should be ashamed of themselves… No wonder the United Nations hasn’t been able to fulfill its intended purpose effectively.”
The day’s troubles began as soon as Trump and First Lady Melania stepped onto an escalator in New York City. The escalator suddenly halted mid-ride, leaving them momentarily stranded. A video of the incident, now popularly known as “Escalatorgate”, shows the couple climbing the rest of the stairs while holding onto the handrails.
Shortly after, during Trump’s speech, he noted that his teleprompter wasn’t functioning correctly. He humorously commented, “I can only say that whoever’s operating this teleprompter is in big trouble,” eliciting laughter from the audience.
Trump then humorously recounted and seemingly dismissed the technical difficulties of the day. He said, “All I received from the United Nations was an escalator that stalled right in the middle on my way up, and a teleprompter that didn’t work.”
Following his speech, Trump claimed that his address was “very well received” and that the teleprompter and escalator malfunctions “may have made the speech more intriguing than it would have been otherwise.” However, by Wednesday, Trump was labeling the escalator incident as “absolutely sabotage” and calling for the arrest of those responsible.
Trump alleged, “It’s astonishing that Melania and I didn’t tumble headfirst onto the sharp edges of these steel steps,” implying that they narrowly avoided injury due to holding onto the handrails. He further demanded an investigation into these incidents, with the Secret Service investigating and the U.N. secretary-general ordering a thorough probe.
U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric announced that the secretary-general had ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the incidents. Preliminary findings suggest that a videographer from the U.S. delegation accidentally triggered a safety feature on the escalator, causing it to halt.
The U.N. has stated that they are responsible for operating the president’s teleprompter and have referred questions regarding its malfunction to the White House. The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Mike Waltz, the newly appointed U.S. ambassador to the U.N., has demanded a detailed explanation of the teleprompter failure’s root cause and immediate preventative measures. He also requested the complete results of the U.N.’s internal investigation into the escalator malfunction, including whether it was intentional sabotage.
Trump administration officials have continued to suggest that these overlapping malfunctions were part of a broader conspiracy. In a Tuesday night appearance on Fox News, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt pointed out that not only the escalator and teleprompter but also the audio system appeared to be affected during Trump’s speech.
Echoing these claims of sabotage, Fox News host Jesse Watters suggested that “the U.N. either needs to be left or bombed,” a statement he later walked back in response to disagreement from his co-hosts. Such rhetoric has caused concern among U.N. staffers, particularly following the Secret Service’s announcement of a large network of devices capable of disrupting cell phones near the U.N. General Assembly meeting.
Further investigations are ongoing into these incidents at the United Nations, with both the U.S. Secret Service and the U.N. conducting separate inquiries to determine the cause and responsibility for the technical malfunctions during President Trump’s speech.
