Trump and Netanyahu Set for White House Showdown Over Gaza Conflict Peace Proposal

The White House meeting between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, scheduled for Monday, will reportedly see Trump advocating for a new plan aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

As the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel approaches, and with more nations recognizing Palestinian statehood during the United Nations General Assembly last week, the stakes are high.

The leaders’ press conference is set for 1:15 p.m. ET, and can be heard by tuning into NPR’s special coverage or watched live here.

Thus far, President Trump has advocated for Hamas to release all Israeli hostages being held in Gaza since October 7, and criticized the recognition of Palestinian statehood as a reward to Hamas. However, Trump’s optimism for an agreement is evident, stating that “I think we have a deal.”

The proposed plan, shared by the U.S. with regional partners, aims to conclude Israel’s war in Gaza, increase aid to the region, and necessitate the release of remaining Israeli hostages within 48 hours. An international coalition will oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, according to a source familiar with the plans.

While President Trump has been a staunch supporter of Netanyahu, his patience is reportedly wearing thin as the conflict continues and casualties mount. Earlier this month, it was claimed that Trump was taken aback by Israel’s strike against Hamas officials in Qatar, a key U.S. ally and mediator in ceasefire negotiations.

Ivo Daalder, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO under the Obama administration, views Monday’s meeting as a significant test of Trump’s willingness to use American influence in a manner not yet demonstrated.

“This meeting will serve as a genuine indicator of Trump’s desire for peace,” Daalder said. “Not merely because he seeks a Nobel Peace Prize, but because he desires an end to the conflict. The world stands against Israel and the United States. There is no one else, and he alone can influence Netanyahu.”
